ABOUT ME
I am a Ph.D. Candidate in Latin American and Latina/o Studies at University of California, Santa Cruz. I am the daughter of Oaxacan-Zapotec migrants and a valley girl in a double sense- my roots go back to the Central Valleys in Oaxaca but they also spread to the San Fernando Valley.
My research interests include: cultural memory, emotional injury and healing as it relates to indigenous Oaxacan communities, cine comunitario, and decoloniality.
From 2017-2019, I conducted my field research in Oaxaca, with the support of Fulbright García Robles grant and a Research Center for the Americas fellowship. In Mexico, I interviewed cultural leaders, teachers, psychologists, and healers. I also partook in limpias (spiritual cleanses) and Temazcal (steam bath rituals involving prayers and medicinal plants) rituals.
